Day Trip to Girona
Girona city, the capital of the region with the same name, has a long and culturally rich history spanning over 2,000 years since being founded around 76 BC. Divided by the river Onyar, the city has been attacked by the French and laid siege to on several occasions. However, they always lost as they were unable to starve the inhabitants who managed to feed themselves with fish from the river.
The tour starts in the morning as you leave Barcelona, driving straight to Girona where you will be able to walk through the beautiful city with its spectacular Roman walls and the Cathedral built in 1038 on the site of a former Mosque. The city is full of nice cafés and restaurants as well as artisan shops selling anything from art to clothing. You can also choose to visit some of the museums and other historical sites in the city that we recommend. After Girona city we will travel to the Costa Brava arriving at the town of Pals, made famous during the cold war when the Americans built masts for Radio Liberty, which used to broadcast pro-capitalist programmes into the former Eastern bloc. From there you will get to explore more of the coast passing towns such as Begur and later Calella de Palafrugell where you can visit the botanic gardens of Cap Roig, which is the result of a romantic 1920’s love story and took 50 years to complete. From Calella de Palafrugell we will return to Barcelona, where you will arrive at approximately 7:30pm.
