Day Trip To Tarragona
Leaving Barcelona city centre we’ll head south, driving down the coast until we reach the city of Tarragona, the former capital of the Hispanic part of the great Roman Empire. The Romans chose Tarragona as a strategic position for their military camp during their wars against the Carthaginians 218 BC. The primitive fortress later grew into one of the biggest provinces of the whole Roman Empire. Before exploring the city, we will take you just past it to see the impressive Roman Aqueduct built in the 1st Century BC, popularly known as “El Pont del Diable”, the Devil´s Bridge. It used to be part of the water supply network of the city and is over 200 meters long and nearly 30 meters high, a real jewel of the area. From the aqueduct we travel back to Tarragona where we enter the old part of the city through a narrow gateway in the ancient walls. Wandering through the historic old quarter, you’ll pass the medieval hospital and eventually stop at the Cathedral which on Sundays mornings becomes the site of an antique market set up by the locals. Aside from the many other culturally interesting attractions of the city, you will not want to miss the amazing view offered from the Roman amphitheatre where gladiators used to battle each other to the death. By midday we’ll leave the city, stopping briefly at Roc de Sant Gaiteta, a very small fishing village built on the coastline which is well worth seeing. By 2pm we’ll arrive in Sitges, the once small fishing village, which today has become one of the most popular towns for the Barcelona cosmopolitan jetsetters. After walking through the labyrinth of streets, you’ll hit the seafront where you can chose from any number of cafes and restaurants depending on your taste. After a leisurely lunch, you might want to hit one of the 17 beaches the town has to offer for a little dip in the ocean. The group will meet up again by 6pm to return to Barcelona, arriving at Plaza Catalunya at approximately 7pm.
